Bishop Museum, the largest museum in Hawaii and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific, is recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services and public educational programs. Its new Science Adventure Center complements the existing exhibit galleries, planetarium, performance and research facilities, and enables children and families to explore volcanology, oceanography, meteorology, biodiversity, and ecology.
The 18,964 square foot first phase of the planned 40,000 square foot Center contains interactive exhibits and live demonstrations based on the latest events surrounding science in Hawaii, presented through a special effects theater, conservation lab, and other hands-on activities. An enormous volcano is the centerpiece of the main gallery. Volcanic eruptions can be viewed from high above on a suspended bridge and at the very bottom of the volcano where a deep ocean tank can be found.
Set in the southwest portion of the campus, the Center serves as a unifying element for the museum complex, enclosing the “great lawn” and preserving views toward Punchbowl while screening out the adjacent freeway and neighborhood. A Science Garden, Multi-purpose Lanai, and Retail space are also part of the project. Additional parking is being added with each phase, for a total increase of 300 on-campus stalls.
