Roosevelt High School in Honolulu’s Makiki neighborhood is listed on the State of Hawaii Historic Register. CDS International was retained to prepare a master plan and provide design services for conversion of the school’s 1929 auditorium building into a Performing Arts Theater. The master plan emphasis was on meeting the school’s educational goals, identifying cost effective concepts and project phasing opportunities, and researching aesthetic, code, environmental and other regulatory issues.
The existing 983-seat auditorium will be converted into a 750-seat state-of-the-art performance facility. The Performing Arts Theater will include a new lobby and stadium seating, as well as increased backstage support facilities. The existing auditorium will be completely renovated to provide a high-quality acoustical environment with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems for a variety of performance types. A larger stage with movable acoustical shells will be installed for the school’s band, a primary user of the facility. The shells, part of the fly system, will lower when needed for band performances. The Theater will also support avant-garde theatrical performances with the addition of a side stage, costume shop, and scene shop. Restroom facilities, practice rooms, and office spaces will also be provided. The school will use the Theater for assemblies, and other functions such as graduation ceremonies and school spirit rallies.
A new driveway turnaround with handicap accessible parking will also be provided near the entry. Construction will occur in three phases due to funding constraints.
